Homework: make sure you have at least 4 elements completed (including the two from yesterday) Blocks 1 and 2: if you are choosing to bring in food, you need to do that either tomorrow or Thursday- I will be out Friday morning for my daughter's Pre-K graduation Today we began a Create Your Own Culture project that will be due on Friday at the end of class. There are 6 required elements and students can select 4 from the other options. See instruction page for details and the rubric- email me or see me if you need another copy.
Homework: have at least 2 elements completed Today we played the Game of Life! No- not the board game. But did anyone opt to have a roommate or children? It was a real-world simulation on budget making. It was an eye opening experience for some to realize just how much it costs to live with the comforts they want- or even just to live with basic necessities. Other students became very appreciative of the sacrifices their parents make to pay for their needs. Yay- Happy Mother's Day!
Homework: none Today we got to hear from a guest speaker, Mr. Jordan (my daddy!). He's a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who has written books that are used as textbooks at colleges, and he also teaches at Emory University. I am very pleased with everyone's behavior- you represented Durham Middle School very well! I hope your eyes were opened to some of the complex aspects of personal finance and economics. If you were lost/confused, it's okay- many adults don't get it either! We'll do a fun activity tomorrow to review creating a budget.
Homework: "Credit Cards" page Depending on which block you have social studies, yesterday/today we did some economics vocabulary assignments to help review these terms.
Homework: none Today we finished up our mock elections with the presidential candidate speeches. Everyone did a great job!
Homework: none This week students worked on filling in a comparison chart for the governments of Cuba, Mexico, and Brazil. Today, using a word bank, students filled in a three-circle Venn diagram comparing/contrasting our case study countries.
